The Moravian Unitas Chorale,
A 55 voice choral group from Lehigh Valley, PA.
Please click here for flyer.
The Unitas Chorale, under the direction of Jill Bruckart, resident of Hope NJ, was formed in 1996 with the support of the Moravian Music Foundation to provide an outlet for Lehigh Valley, PA, area Moravians to learn and perform Moravian Music, both old favorites and newly edited works from the archive collections. The Unitas Chorale has been privileged to debut newly composed or arranged works from contemporary Moravian composers, works by composers who utilize beloved Moravian hymn tunes, and works by those who have a close association with Moravian institutions. The Chorale is an all-volunteer organization, and has benefited from the talents of many gifted musicians as they honor our musical heritage. Participants are both Moravians and other friends from the surrounding communities. 18th Century composers such as Gregor, Reissinger, Hagen and Wolle share the stage with more recent composers such at Warner, Kroeger, Bates and Henkelmann.
Prior to the concert the Dean and Vice President Emeritus of the Moravian Seminary in Bethlehem, PA, the Rev. Dr. David A. Schattschneider, gave a talk, "Hope and the Moravians". For a copy of his lecture, please click here.

On September 16 at 7 pm "Lyra” a distinguished choral singing group from Saint Petersburg, Russia, will return for its third concert at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church on High Street in Hope NJ. The program will include a group of eight pieces of the beautiful a cappella sacred choral music of the Russian Orthodox Church and several Russian folk songs, and this year they will add a number of solos and duets, songs and romances by Russian composers.
"Lyra” consists of a group of singers, most trained in the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, who regularly sing in churches, concert halls and the opera houses of their home city. It is rarely possible in this country to hear the beautiful music of the Russian Orthodox Church performed by musicians expert in the techniques of unaccompanied vocal singing and trained in the Church Slavonic that it employs. A special attraction of this concert will be the deep bass voice of Miroslav Alexeev who often appears as special guest soloist in the churches of Saint Petersburg, but who will be new to Hope audiences. In the opera and song repertory of the second half of the concert we shall hear the voice of Anna Makarenko, soprano. member of the School of Vocal Studies of the Mariinsky (Kirov) Opera.
Among the composers whose works will be sung are Bortniansky, who wrote around 1800 and is known as the first Russian composer to stress the bass voice, Rymsky-Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky. From the latter we shall hear Olga and Tatiana’s duet from Eugene Onegin,
The interior of historic Saint Luke’s Church is a perfect setting for this music. The Church is a right turn at the flashing light in Hope if you arrive from exit 12 of I 80.
Tickets are $25, $10 for students under 21. For information and tickets call: (908) 459 4340.
Members of "Lyra”: Olga Karandasova, soprano; Anna Makarenko, soprano; Irina Zykova, mezzo-soprano; Oleg Trofimov, tenor; Sergey Tupitsyn, baritone; Miroslav Alexeev, bass.
Two photos of the group are available.
